With the advance of Red Army, fearing the accusations of collaboration, the family tried to flee to Switzerland, but they were placed into the displaced persons camp in the American Zone of Germany in 1944. Here they had their own daughter Alyja (Alyna) (Alyja has become an artist as well, a costume designer at Walt Disney theme parks known under the name Alyja Kalinich. In 1942 she eventually reached Lithuania and settled in Kaunas. With them they had Ona's sister's baby daughter Birutė (now Birute Zuyovich who was eventually adopted by Ona's family, because both Ona and her sister, also named Birutė, an actress, thought of each other that they perished, and had reunion only 50 years later). In 1933 she met in Minsk and married artist Nicolay Paskevich When the advancing Nazi German army took Minsk, the family had to flee. In 1938 she took part in an exhibition at the Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow.
After the graduation from Vitebsk Arts Tekhnikum in 1932 she earned her living by drawing caricatures for Belarusian magazines and newspapers. In 1928 she moved with her widowed mother to what is now Belarus.
She studied drawing under Juozas Zikaras at the Panevėžys gymnasium. Overall a good and different experience different from the typical tourist Florida.Ona Dokalskaitė was born in Sejny, Congress Poland, Russian Empire (now in Poland). The grounds were beautiful and make sure to take the nature trail back to the parking lot. The castle is out in the middle of nowhere but added to the experience. The add on tour did not feel as rushed and questions were more encouraged on that tour. Maybe time to explore the rooms on your own after the tour for a few mins to revisit would be nice. Since there was so much to take in, a more leisurely pace would have been appreciated. The tour guide was overall good at explaining the pieces, and you could tell she had a connection to Solomon, but it felt kind of rushed. The amount of artwork was almost overwhelming, and you can see his vision, eccentricity and creativity in each piece. Interesting the script of the tour that the tour guide used was written by Solomon himself.

The castle is full of his creations and the tour was informative explaining various pieces. Solomon used discarded metal "junk" and turned it into beautiful works of art. Unique experience touring an aluminum castle with eclectic art pieces from a variety of different mediums. If you go, just see the outside and wander the grounds. If you live over 30 mnts away, and I'm pretty sure all of civilization does, it's not worth the excursion. Overall, the 'castle' smells like mold or mildew, or both.īottom-line, the outside of the 'castle' is pretty cool, no need to go on the expensive $25 castle tour.īetween the 3 of us visiting, we spent about $140 for lunch and tour. The last time the 'castle' was flooded was in 2017 b/c it is built near a river on swamp land. Moreover, the lower half of the walls are made with Styrofoam b/c of the flooding in rainy months. The ceiling construction looks like it is made of plywood and at the seams there are gaps that expose the interior to the outside elements.

The 'castle' is constructed more like a series of sheds and there was black mold throughout the facility up near the ceiling.
The inside of the house did not meet the exterior's buildup. Tour would be much better if it was a walk through at your own pace. Solomon accomplished some of the least desirable sculptures in his tinkering days.
Viewing his actual 'junk' would have been more entertaining. Solomon himself and you are subject to a rather pain staking, pun filled, slow moving tour of Mr. OMG, if you are ADHD DO NOT GO ON THAT TOUR! The best part about it was the adorable tour guide's personality. We wanted to see the inside of the castle and the only way is to pay for a tour. Food was a bit on the expensive side for instant mashed potatoes and canned flavorless green beans.
